When is the best time to paint (or have painted) outside?

The exterior season runs roughly from April to October — but the smartest moment to request quotes comes earlier. The maintenance calendar.

The rule of thumb in the trade: exterior painting is possible from around 10 degrees, on a dry surface and with no rain on the way. In practice that means a season running roughly from April through October. Weather counts within that season too: a damp spring, a heatwave on the sunny side or early night frost in October can shift a schedule.

Don't postpone exterior work too long. Paint isn't cosmetic but the protective layer of your woodwork: where the coat goes dull, cracks or flakes, moisture soaks into the wood — and then wood rot repair becomes the next, far more expensive job. The usual cycle for exterior painting is 5 to 7 years; the sunny and weather sides usually come up sooner than the rest.

The smartest moment to request quotes is winter. Painters' diaries fill up fast in spring; whoever asks in January or February is first in line when the season starts — with plenty of time to set quotes against the price index.

And winter itself? That's indoor season. Wall, ceiling and trim work don't depend on the weather, and many painters deliberately schedule interior painting in the months when nothing can happen outside. Placing indoor and outdoor work with the same professional spreads the jobs across the year with a single point of contact.
